From 23 to 24 November 2021Mr. Georges Faber, the Ambassador of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg to the Russian Federation, paid an official visit to the Tambov region. The main objectives of the visit were to honour the memory of the young Luxembourgers who lost their lives in the Tambov region as prisoners of war after being forcefully drafted into the German army during World War II and to explore ways to further develop the bilateral relationship with the region.

On 23 November, Ambassador Faber met with the Head of the Tambov region, Mr. Maxim Egorov, in the historical museum complex Asseev Estate. While noting the longstanding links of friendship between Tambov and Luxembourg, the parties agreed that the joined commemoration of a difficult past helps to prepare a better future together. The meeting was an occasion as well to take stock of the existing bilateral cooperation and to explore mutually beneficial opportunities in additional areas.

During his visit, the Ambassador also met with Mr. Vladimir Stromov, the Rector of the Tambov State University, to assess the partnership in the field of higher education initiated between the University of Tambov and the University of Luxembourg in 2013. He also met with a group of students for an open discussion about a whole range of interesting topics. Furthermore, the Ambassador was received by the Metropolitan Theodosius of Tambov and Rasskazovo at the Kazan monastery and visited the Theological Seminary.

To commemorate the suffering of numerous young Luxembourgers during World War II, the Ambassador laid a wreath in front of the monument dedicated to the memory of “Luxembourg’s sons”, forcibly recruited by Nazi Germany, who died in captivity in Tambov and Kirsanov. The Deputy Head of the Tambov region, Mr. Sergey Yukhachev, joined the Ambassador at the solemn wreath laying ceremony close to Rada station. Together with the Head of the Tambov region, Mr. Maxim Egorov, Ambassador Faber also laid a wreath in front of the Eternal Flame Memorial monument honouring the people of Tambov who gave their lives for their country in the Great Patriotic War. The Ambassador paid a visit to the International Cemetery in Rada as well.

During his official visit to the Tambov region, the Ambassador finally had the opportunity to discover several prominent cultural and religious sites in the cities of Tambov and Michurinsk.
