Mikhail Gorbachev participates at the Conference “Europe in the 21st Century” in Luxembourg, May 18th-19th, 2012
| The Luxembourg Institute for European and International Studies ( IEIS) and the New Policy Forum ( Gorbachev Forum ), with the cooperation of the Representation of the European Commission in Luxembourg and the “Notre Europe” think tank organised an international conference on “Europe in the 21st Century : Challenges and Opportunities” at the Jean Monnet Building on May 18th – 19th, 2012. 350 participants attended the conference where speeches were held by the former President of the USSR, Mr. Mikhail Gorbachev, the former President of the European Commission, Mr. Jacques Delors and the current EU Commissioner for Justice, Mrs Viviane Reding, in the presence of the Minister of Justice of the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg, Mr. Francois Biltgen. |
The conference participants touched on various topics such as the ongoing crisis in the Euro zone, the EU’s institutional shortcomings and the EU’s neighborhood policy. Mikhail Gorbachev, in his keynote address, deplored that Europeans have not used their opportunities to the fullest after the Cold War and admonished that without including Russia the European project would remain incomplete.
