Association of veterans from Luxembourg has visited Tambov

Published Wednesday May 18 2016

On 16th – 18th May 2016 the Association of Tambov veterans from Luxembourg (Amicale des Anciens de Tambov) has visited Tambov to honour the memory of more than 1000 young Luxembourg men held in the camp of Tambov and in the hospital of Kirsanov during World War II. They had been forcefully recruited as soldiers by occupying Nazi Germany and sent to the Eastern Front to fight for an enemy army. Of those young Luxembourgers, held as prisoners in the camp of Tambov and in the hospital of Kirsanov in the years 1943-1945, more than 150 died on the territory of the Tambov Region or on their way back home.

A commemorative monument has been inaugurated in Tambov in the presence of the Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker and the Governor of Tambov Oleg Betin in September 2012.

The Association of Tambov veterans also stayed in Moscow and met with Mr Ambassador Pierre Ferring at the Embassy.
